Ford Escape Radio Not Working: Causes & How to Fix

If your Ford Escape radio is not working, it might be due to a simple glitch that shouldn’t take much hassle to fix.

In some cases, you could turn on your Ford Escape and the radio doesn’t come up.  In other cases, it does turn on, but only a few buttons are able to work but stop functioning after a while. Another possibility is that the power and menu buttons work perfectly, but the directional and OK buttons are just frozen, so you can’t really do anything with the radio.

Whichever one it is, you should find a suitable fix for all Ford Escape Radio problems in this piece.

Technical Glitch

A simple technical glitch would freeze your radio screen and buttons or just the buttons alone. If you don’t know, they are increasingly common in cars just as they are on your smartphone, and luckily, they are quite easy to fix.

Head Unit Failure

This is a big problem that could rack up some costs. The reason for your radio problems could be due to the head unit failure which means you have to take out the radio heat unit module and fix a new piece.

Ford Escape Radio Not Working: How to Fix

Perform a soft reset

A soft reset could easily correct any technical glitches or mild problems affecting the radio. To perform a soft reset,

  • Turn on your car and the radio
  • Press and hold the power and forward button for 15 seconds
  • This should reset the system

If nothing happens, then you would have to rely on the next fix.

Replace the Head Unit

If soft resetting doesn’t solve the problem, then you would have to remove and replace the head unit module.

To do this…

  • Make sure your vehicle is turned off and make sure you have the E-brake on
  • You would have to remove the radio bezels first and for this, you will need a T25 screw
  • Take out both screws from the bottom of the radio
  • Grab the radio outer shell (bezels) from underneath and pull it out
  • When the radio bezels come off, disconnect the electric connector
  • Unscrew the radio box and pull it out
  • Disconnect the three connectors at the back of the radio box
  • Take the replacement radio box (head unit module) and plug back the three connectors.
  • Place the radio unit back and screw it tight.
  • Reconnect the electric connector and place the radio bezels over the radio box
  • Turn on your car to the run position to power the radio, then press the buttons to see if it works.
  • If it doesn’t work, then it means the replacement radio unit is faulty and would need to be replaced (You should test the replacement radio box to avoid this problem).

A functional radio box should get your radio back to the way it was when fixed and this should solve the problem.

Wrap-up

Keeping your car off when removing the old radio box and installing the new one is a pretty much obvious but very important precaution if you don’t want more problems arising during the fix.

Radio box issues are not as common as you think so you shouldn’t worry about replacing the new one too soon. In addition, make sure you purchase the new radio box from only verified dealers to avoid buying counterfeit or faulty radio boxes.
