Why wiper blades need to be changed often

But one question that bugs the mind is, “why do wiper blades deteriorate so quickly?” The truth is that there are several reasons. You have to remember that it is the rubber part of the blades that get bad first. So what are the reasons behind this? Some of the most common ones include:

• Exposure to sun rays, ozone deterioration, and ultraviolet radiation.
• Oil from car waxes and exposure to other rubber-deteriorating oil.
• Airborne debris including dust, sand, and mud that are carried by the wind.
• Moisture such as salt water and acid rain.

Streaking

This mostly occurs when the rubber edge of the wiper blade hardens, dries, or cracks. It also occurs when the wiper blade carries foreign bodies in its cracks. Check the wiper blade if the cracks are not so large. In this case, sandpaper will work for the edges. However, if the cracks are large or the blade is hard, you need to change the blade.

Wearing

This is a result of using the blade for extended periods. You will notice that the edges of the rubber are no longer sharp, instead, they are rounded. Changing the wiper blades is imminent at this point.

Skipping

In this case, the wiper blades develop curvatures because they haven’t been used for a while. As such, they no longer conform properly to the windshield. When this happens, you need to change the wiper blade.

Bent frames

Several factors could contribute to bent frames. When this occurs, the wiper blades no longer have contact with the windshield as they should. To solve the problem, you should bend the wiper frames back into place using a pair of pliers. If you are not confident of doing this by yourself, seek professional help.
