How Wiper Blades Work
Have you ever wondered how your vehicle’s wiper blades work? If your answer is yes, then you are not alone. Many of us often wonder about the mechanism behind the way our car wipers function. Here’s a simple explanation.
A small electric motor supplies power to your wiper blades. It is this motor that makes the blades move back and forth. However, the blades in a strong force to accelerate their movement across the windshield. As such, they come with a feature called “worm gear.” This gear multiplies the motor’s torque by 50. The effect of this is what you see when your wipers move at their fastest speed in heavy rain.
In plain English, your wipers have a thin rubber strip lining their edges. The wiper arms move the blades across the windshield in a back and forth motion to rid it of water and other items. Why the rubber strips? They ensure that your wiper blades function without creating streaks on the windshield.
You may think your wiper blade is only connected to the middle of your windshield. However, that single connection involves several arms that branch out from each other. In essence, the blades have connections in between six to eight locations on your wiper arm.
